Salto H2 Bike Run

In the middle of London’s busy media, advertising and entertainment district, near Carnaby Street, in the heart of Soho, is H2 Bike Run. Featuring over one thousand four hundred lockers, all equipped with state-of-the-art electric locks from SALTO, this gym and bike club for cyclists and runners on the commute is the next big thing in healthy commuter living.

The brainchild of property developer and keen cyclist, Piers Slater, H2 Bike Run was born out of Slater’s own frustration with arriving at work hot and sweaty from cycling to work, and having to shower and change in poor facilities. H2 is the ground-breaking solution to this problem.
Cycling to work is growing in popularity in the capital. Commuters are growing tired of cramped, unhygienic tubes and buses. Instead, people are increasingly aiming to combine a healthy lifestyle with saving money and the planet through cycling. H2 combines the demand for bike storage – in Soho parking, even for cyclists, is scarce – with luxury showering and changing facilities, as well as a small gym and a range of additional services. These services include sports therapy, laundry service, bike servicing, and cycle retail and repairs. This is in addition to the large volume of SALTO lockers that will prove a real godsend to cycling commuters.

Built on the site of a former car park, H2 Bike Run was set up with a £1.9 million investment, and is just the beginning! Slater plans to develop the H2 concept into a chain across London, having identified a demand for up to twenty additional clubs across the capital. Already, ten locations are marked for development, where the entire catchment area is within a five minute walk. This should be exciting news for commuters whose time constraints and needs are ideally catered to by the H2 brand.

Of utmost importance is a high level of security for members, and so Slater was determined that the extensive locker facilities in the club should be perfect from the outset. Commuters need to feel safe leaving their money, smart phones, laptops and so on, and knowing this, Slater identified the ideal solution. That solution was SALTO, whose XS4 electronic locker features state-of-the-art access control which is both ultimately secure and easy to use.

“As world leaders in advanced battery powered wireless access control solutions, the SALTO XS4 electronic locker lock was ideal for H2 Bike Run,” remarks Chris Saxby of Ansador Ltd, SALTO’s local business partner. “Working in consultation with Piers Slater and SALTO we designed and installed a highly secure and flexible access control system to meet all of the security demands of the locker room environment at H2 Bike Run.

The XS4 locker lock can be fully integrated with the SALTO access control solution or be operated as a stand-alone system. Part of the brief was that the lockers had to be flexible enough to allow for change of use patterns, allowing for permanent storage use or variable – maximum 2 hours – use, so to achieve this we fitted 1,400 lockers locks as well as 9 XS4 E9450 electronic escutcheon handle sets to provide the benefits of full access control rights programmed via software as required and an automatic audit trail facility to record the last 1000 events at each locker.”

The handle of the XS4 locker is ergonomically designed for easy use, even with wet hands. It features a durable, wipe-clean construction which is highly resistant to physical wear and tear, chemicals and UV radiation. What is more, the electronic components, locking mechanism and battery pack are all located inside the door, keeping the locker safe from potential vandalism or sabotage.

The access reader is built into the locking handle and the ID carrier – key card, wristband, key fob or bracelet using i-Button, Mifare, Mifare plus, DESfire, DESfire EV1, Ultralight C, HID iClass, Legic, Picopass or SKIDATA technology – is simply presented to the reader and the XS4 locker lock will grant or deny access. A family option allows for multiple ID carriers to operate a single locker if required.

H2 Bike Run boasts over three hundred secure bike parking spaces inside the building on Josta racks. In addition to the wide range of well-appointed facilities, including hair straighteners and driers in the changing rooms, there is also a large spin studio on site. Affiliated with a top quality, New York based spinning programme that guarantees a serious work-out, H2’s spin classes let members know who the instructor will be, as well as whether to expect an endurance, interval, strength or race/recovery ride. Target heart-rate zones are also indicated.
As well as providing a welcome facility for individual members, H2 Bike Run will also appeal to employers, with the chance of corporate membership offering a cost-effective alternative to providing their own facilities for cyclists and runners.

With exciting plans for expansion across London, and further afield into other cities, H2 Bike Run is set for success. And with the flexible and highly secure XS4 locker system in place, this is a revolution in health and fitness that has your safety and security in mind.
