Access Control

Access Control systems are electronic security systems that manage individuals across either single or multi-site premises. The main functions of access control systems are to monitor the locations of individuals within a building, control where individuals are able to gain access and manage individual user permissions to ensure that access is granted to the authorised individual to the appropriate areas at the correct times.

Smart card systems

Access Control systems can be integrated to work with various types of smart cards. Smart Card systems allow for a single card to be used in multiple applications leading to a reduced cost in card orders and greater security encryption. Smart Cards have an embedded microchip that can be loaded with data for use with both the electronic security system in place as well as a number of third party applications such as:

  • Access control
  • Cashless vending
  • Follow me printing
  • ID card
  • PC log on

Biometric systems

Biometric systems are likely one of the most advanced forms of access control available today as they do not reply on a card or number, but the individual’s biological identity. Biometric readers electronically store a template of the individuals fingerprint, this template is then encrypted and stored onto the system so as to provide a match when the individuals presents their finger to reader. Fingerprint readers are the most commonly used type of biometric security however other options include, retina, hand and voice recognition.

Biometric readers are commonly integrated to card access systems to provide enhanced security to high security areas of a particular site. The fingerprint is stored within the memory sector of the card rather than on the client database when using smart card technology such as Mifare, Desfire or HID.
